Most people suffer from dry skin on occasion, however it is an extremely common problem for eczema sufferers.

If you frequently suffer from dry skin, dry itchy skin, or dry flaky skin, you may have eczema.

The most common symptoms found in eczema sufferers are:

  • Dry skin.
  • Dry itchy skin.
  • Dry flaky skin.
  • Cracked or scaly skin.
  • Reddening of the skin.
  • Raw, painful or sensitive skin.
  • Thickened leathery skin.
  • Weeping of the skin.

Dry skin is due to lack of water in the outermost layer of dead cells in the epidermis that protects living tissue from stimuli and forms a barrier to keep moisture in.

Water will evaporate from the skin if the skin surface does not have enough oil. People who suffer from eczema have inadequate natural waterproofing of the skin. This causes moisture to evaporate from their skin quicker than it would on normal skin, and this therefore leads to an increase in dry skin.

Although it is normally easier said than done, you should avoid scratching dry itchy skin or dry flaky skin, as it will only make the condition worse. It may even cause the skin to become infected.

If you suffer from eczema and dry skin it may become worse or frequently return unless you use some form of dry skin treatment.
