What is Dyshidrotic Eczema?

Dyshidrotic eczema is a form of eczema that shows up as small blisters filled with fluid. It normally shows up on the hands and feet. It can breakout on the sides of toes, soles of your feet, and fingers.

This is an extra itchy form of eczema, and outbreaks can last for a period of weeks. Through the blisters drying, the skin becomes cracked, dry, and painful.

Dyshidrotic Eczema Symptoms.

There are various symptoms associated with dishidrotic eczema.

Your skin can become very inflamed and cause the skin to crack and fluid (serum) to collect.

Other symptoms can involve:

  • Small bumps that itch slowly turning into a rash of blisters containing fluid.
  • The skin can crack or get fissures in it, especially around the toes or fingers.
  • The itching associated with this form of eczema can become quite severe.

As the blisters become larger, they can become very painful.

Dyshidrotic Eczema Causes.

No singular cause can currently be pinpointed for Dyshidrotic Eczema. Similar to other forms of eczema, it can be triggered by allergens that the sufferer may be sensitive to.

Breakouts can happen during the times of the year that you are allergic to the outside stimuli. This could be as simple as hay fever, or it could be a more serious condition such as asthma.

Dyshidrotic Eczema Treatments.

Once you have been properly diagnosed with Dyshidrotic Eczema, you can then obtain the correct treatment. The correct treatment will alleviate the symptoms and make the sufferers life a whole lot easier.

Some of those treatments are:

  • Cold or wet compresses is one thing you can try at home to relieve the itching. These can be used in conjunction with certain topical solutions to reduce the blisters and the irritation they cause you.
  • Corticosteroid ointments and creams are often prescribed by medical professionals for relief of the blisters and rashes that are part of dyshidrotic eczema. These mixtures can help the blisters to get smaller and even go away. They can also keep the skin from cracking due to dryness.
  • Antihistamines are often prescribed to get rid of the itching. Both loratadine and diphenhydramine are effective in this area.
  • There are a variety of light therapies that could also be beneficial such as the PUVA (psoralen with ultraviolet A) or the use of ultraviolet B light therapy.
  • An oral steroid may also be part of your treatment to help with the itching and other symptoms, however these can have serious side effects.
  • There are also the pimecrolimus (Elidel) and tacrolimus (Protopic), which suppress the immune system, and are used when other treatments are not successful. Please note that you may be at risk of developing skin infections due to the fact that these drugs suppress the immune system.

Hopefully this information on various Dyshidrotic Eczema Treatments will help, however you need to be aware that this type of eczema can come back even with treatment.
